Looking for an abundance of wildlife accessible as a day trip from Kota Kinabalu? Join an afternoon trip to the Klias wetlands—one of the best spots on the west coast of Sabah to see proboscis monkeys in their natural habitat! Besides having the opportunity to see the proboscis monkey in the wild, you may also get the chance to see a variety of birds, long tailed macaque monkeys, silver langur and possibly crocodiles. The scenic Klias River is located around 115 km from Kota Kinabalu and takes around 2 hours to reach by road.

    Day 1

    Proboscis monkey river cruise & fireflies (afternoon/evening)

    1.15 - 1.45pm (dependant on location) Get picked-up from your hotel for a 2 hour journey to the Southwestern part of Sabah. Upon arrival, enjoy tea, coffee and locally made cake before joining your river cruise. 4pm – Board the comfortable fibreglass speedboat and cruise down the river for around 1hour 30mins in search of wildlife. Your guide will help you to spot macaques, crocodiles as well as the famous proboscis monkeys. 6pm – Return to the wetlands base and enjoy a Malaysian style buffet dinner. Return to the river for a short cruise to catch a glimpse of fireflies slowly lighting up, decorating the mangrove trees and then lighting up the sky. Listen to the crickets singing while you walk back to the coach. 9 - 9.30pm – Estimated arrival back in Kota Kinabalu. *All times are estimated and are dependant on weather and traffic conditions

    What time are the pick-up and return?
    You are picked up from your hotel between 1.15 and 1.45pm depending on your location, for a two hour journey to the south-western part of Sabah. The estimated arrival back in Kota Kinabalu is between 9 and 9.30pm. All times are estimated and depend on weather and traffic conditions.
    What happens during the afternoon and evening?
    On arrival you enjoy tea, coffee and locally made cake before boarding a comfortable fibreglass speedboat at 4pm for a cruise of around an hour and a half. At 6pm you return to the wetlands base for a Malaysian style buffet dinner, then head back to the river for a short cruise to see the fireflies lighting up the mangrove trees.
    What wildlife might I see?
    Your guide will be searching for macaques, crocodiles and the famous proboscis monkeys along the river, followed by fireflies decorating the mangroves after dark.
    What is included in the price?
    The adult price of RM200 per person covers your return transfer, an English speaking guide, a light refreshment and dinner. Prices are valid until 31 Dec 2026.
    Are there child rates?
    Children aged 3 to 11 years old receive a RM40 discount, at RM160 per person. Children aged 2 years and below travel free of charge.
    What should I bring?
    A bottle of water, sunscreen, binoculars, insect repellent, a camera, a cap or hat and a raincoat.
    Can I book if I am travelling alone, or staying outside the city?
    Tours depart from Kota Kinabalu based on a minimum of two people, and solo travellers may join existing departures. Outskirts charges apply for pick up or drop off outside of Kota Kinabalu city, so please let us know where you are staying when you book.
