Day Trips from Kota Kinabalu

You don’t have to travel far from Kota Kinabalu to experience some of Sabah’s most enjoyable adventures. Within a few hours of the city, you can raft a jungle river, trek beneath Mount Kinabalu or search for proboscis monkeys and fireflies in the Klias wetlands.

River Junkie’s day trips from Kota Kinabalu are ideal if you have a spare day before or after a longer Sabah itinerary, or simply want to explore beyond the city without changing hotels. All three trips include return transfers from Kota Kinabalu hotels.

Kiulu River rafting

Kiulu River rafting is Sabah’s best choice for a relaxed, family-friendly white-water adventure. The Kiulu is a Grade I–II river, providing enough rapids to make the trip exciting without requiring previous rafting experience.

The rafting trip combines gentle rapids with quieter sections where you can swim, paddle and enjoy the surrounding countryside. The river passes through rural villages and rainforest, giving you a chance to see a different side of Sabah away from Kota Kinabalu.

Kinabalu Geopark trekking

The Kinabalu Geopark Trekking day trip takes you into the foothills of Mount Kinabalu for a completely different experience.

The trek is based around Kiau village, where you’ll explore forest trails with a local Dusun guide. Depending on conditions, the route can include waterfalls, forest ridges, local farms and viewpoints with impressive views towards Mount Kinabalu.

This is a good option if you want to experience the landscapes around Mount Kinabalu but don’t want to climb the mountain itself. There is no climbing permit, overnight stay or early-morning summit attempt involved.

The day also provides an opportunity to learn more about the Dusun communities who live around Mount Kinabalu, making this as much a cultural experience as a jungle trek.

Best for: Hikers, nature lovers, families and travellers interested in local culture.

Proboscis monkeys & fireflies

The Proboscis Monkey River Cruise & Fireflies Tour is our wildlife-focused day trip from Kota Kinabalu, travelling to the Klias wetlands in southwestern Sabah.

The afternoon river cruise provides opportunities to look for wild proboscis monkeys, silvered langurs, crocodiles and wetland birds along the river. As darkness falls, the focus switches to the extraordinary sight of thousands of fireflies gathering in the trees beside the river.

This is a long day from Kota Kinabalu, with the Klias wetlands around 2.5 hours from the city, but the combination of wildlife and fireflies makes it one of Sabah’s most rewarding day trips.

Best for: Wildlife enthusiasts, photographers, families and anyone who wants to experience Sabah’s rainforest and wetlands without travelling to the east coast.
